Get your Microsoft Confirmation ID
When a licence cannot activate over the internet, Microsoft provides a second, fully supported route: phone activation. Here is exactly how it works, and how we help.
When you need this
Most keys activate online in seconds. Phone activation exists for the cases where that exchange cannot happen or is refused:
- The PC has no internet connection, or sits behind a firewall that blocks Microsoft's activation servers.
- Windows reports an activation server error such as
0x8007232B,0xC004F074or0x8007267C. - You have reinstalled Windows on the same computer and online activation says the key is already in use.
- You replaced the motherboard or another major component, and the licence needs to be re-issued for the new hardware.
Phone activation is Microsoft's own process, run by Microsoft's automated system. The Confirmation ID is issued by Microsoft — not by us — and only for a genuine licence.
How phone activation works
Four steps, usually under ten minutes.
- Open the phone activation wizard. Press Windows + R, type
slui 4and press Enter. Windows opens the activation-by-phone screen. For Office, the same screen appears when an app offers "Activate by phone". - Choose your country. Windows then shows the correct Microsoft phone number and a long Installation ID — several groups of digits generated from your key and your hardware.
- Call the number shown. Microsoft's automated system asks you to read or key in the Installation ID, then reads back a Confirmation ID. Write it down carefully.
- Enter the Confirmation ID. Type it into the boxes on the same Windows screen and select Activate Windows. The Activation page should now say your copy is activated.
Keep the wizard open for the whole call — closing it generates a new Installation ID, and the Confirmation ID you were given will no longer match.

Questions about phone activation
Is phone activation normal?
Yes. Microsoft has offered it for decades for computers that are offline, on restricted networks, or reinstalled after a hardware change. The wizard is built into Windows itself.
Does the Confirmation ID replace my product key?
No. Your product key stays the same and remains your licence. The Confirmation ID is a one-time response that completes activation on that particular installation.
I changed my motherboard — do I need a new key?
Usually not. A major hardware change makes Microsoft treat the PC as a new device, which is exactly what phone activation is for. Follow the steps above, and contact us if the automated system does not issue an ID.
How long does it take?
